Hi,

I have a sticking solenoid on my E39 2003 525 Touring (straight 6 M54 petrol). Confirmed by giving the starter/solenoid housing a good whack to get it to throw/engage. Now my wife ain't too happy about having to carry a hammer around on the off chance it may stick again :sarcastic

So, with a view to replacing the starter/soleniod, how easy is it to remove the existing. I understand there are 2 or 3 bolts that go in from the bell housing side that hold this in. Are they accessible without having to remove anything?

Also if I do remove the bolts is there room to remove the unit?

Anyone done one? Any tips (even if it is to go and get an indy to do it!)

Thanks Jonny. Seems that the solenoid can be removed from the starter for cleaning/overhauling. Tempted to have a go at this before I spend £110 on a replacement!

Just wish those pictures showed it with the engine INSIDE the car. Interested to know how easy to get to those two bell housing bolts, as well as withdrawing the unit - lots of pipe/cable work on that side!
