My temperature gauge climbs to half (normal ) positon then falls to just above cold then rises again to half does the every now and again.

It never goes above half way though !

anyone else with this problem ?

Got to suspect a dodgy/slow/sticking thermostat I think, but I have never had this problem with mine

That's an E46's way of telling you it's overdue for cooling system maintenance. Replace thermostat, top radiator hose, and expansion tank.

Is changing the thermostat difficult to do ?
