thanks for quick reply... I may aswel tell you the whole problem now..

3-4 days ago had half a tank of fuel in, turned it off, 2-3 mins turned it back on, and had quater of a tank extra and another 80 miles on the range :S

though nothing of it... carried on as usual. Was using the car today, 22 miles left of fuel, parked car up, came back to it, and it was struggling the start and then stalling, did this a few times, tried revving, no luck.

so i thought it might be out of fuel due the the dodgey fuel level the other day, put 10 litres in with a jerry can.. and tried starting, now it just turns and doesnt even start to fire at all. :confused

Read a few bits on here.. but not really sure what to make of it. whats the chances of it being the relay? or is the fuel pump going a common problem?

If you run out of fuel you can damage the fuel pump...

 

Isn't that more of an issue on the high pressure pumps found on oil burners?

 

any car...not limited to BMW's that one....

 

I know running out of diesel can damage the HP pumps, but it's the first I've heard of it damaging a pump on a petrol.

How many pumps are there on a petrol e46 anyway?

Can you hear the fuel pump prime up when you turn the ignition on or when you crank over the engine? Remove the rear seat base and the metal cover on the drivers side that lives under the rear seat base so you can hear easier.

Otherwise remove the fuel line going to the fuel rail and put it in a clear bottle then have someone crank the engine over. :thumbsup
