hi guys. hope somone can help. i have an e46 325 convertible auto it goes up through the gears alright but as it's changing down as it drops into the lowest gear there is a clunk. also when driving on the motorway say doing 60 and you tap the pedal to kick it down a gear it won't drop down. took it to a gearbox specialist who put it on their diagnostics machine and they said the gearbox was showing no faults. then phoned the nice people at bmw they said i would have to book it in so that their gearbox technician could check it out they said they had heard of this problem before and that flushing the geabox had sorted the problem. with a diagnostics check and flushing the gearbox would take about three hours at £160 an hour but there was no gaurantee it would work. if i knew it was the gearbox it would probably work out cheaper to buy a second hand box. any ideas

hi ronnie. thanks for the reply. i had the oil changed in the box but it was still the same.
i was talking to a former bmw tec yesterday and he said it might need to be reprogramed
he also said it might have fault codes that have not been cleared so it's booked into bmw for a diagnostics check next wednesday if i get an answer to the problem i'll post it here so that anyone else with the same problem will have somthing to go on. once again thanks for the help.

BMW may have a update for the gearbox ECU, your dealer will be able to tell you when you take it in :)

Mine's doing the same, and I'm almost certain it jsut needs the software update, yet every dealer is trying to tell me they need to spend an hour diagnosing it, then carrying out whatever needs to be done.
