Hi I bought a BMW 318i SE 52 plate yestaday and as I stopped at so e traffic lights I noticed that my rev counter was still rev slightly and u could hear it on the engine.

I was just wondering is this what should happen on this type of car? Or do I have a problem with it?

was it fully warmed up when you noticed this?
its possible some unmetered air may be getting in so check all the induction pipework for cracks.
what speed was it idling at?...and does it do it all the time?

Well I'd bin driving 10-15 mins. The car was stopped at the lights, I had no feet on the pedels but the rev Counter was going up and down every 2-3 secs and could hear the engine reving.

Also off the subject but on the dashboard when I start up the engine the picture of the car on the dash has a red light symbol on the rear tail. What could this be as it won't go off?

The engine revving slightly on it's own will most likely be down to a air leak as mentioned by Mark :thumbsup
