Hi.

My 2002 e46 is showing Fault Codes P0011 and P0366 when I hook up the obdc2 to it.

The symptoms of the car are it's got a bit of lag when sticking your foot down. Also there is a definite lack of power. A ford focus driven by the wife pulls away from me and I just can't keep up. The exhaust sounds a bit blowy but I can't see any holes in it.

Any ideas what it could be?

Was it / is it rattly from the timing chain area? These (4 cylinder) engines are notorious for timing chain tension issues and can even jump a tooth. Those are the classic codes for that fault. The timing chain tension was modified but it's too late now if it has skipped or broken up its timing guides.

Could be the camshaft sensor but I would be inclined to check the timing. You could also try replacing the chain tensioner with the newer type. These things are cheap (ish).

If the chain has stretched or skipped it's not good news.

First garage has had a look and thinks it is the timing chain. They reckon it's too big of job for them and gave me details of a bmw specialist in the area. Phoned them up and asked for a worst case scenario of what the cost would be if it is the timing chain and they said £500.

Quite happy with that so booked it in.
