Strange if it's the tappets.

When they are serviced (or new) they have nothing in them so on startup they will be noisey, but once the oil gets through them they should be almost silent.

Then again one of them may have failed, or worn. The oil could be too thin and if the oil hasn't been changed often it may have worn one or more.

I would try dupping the oil that's in it and filling it with something new along with a new oil filter.

See what happens then.

i checked my service where it states what is done at what inspection but it did'nt mention anything about changing the oil in that inspection oil air and fuel filter too be changed.

Last oil change was done at 161000 thats 19000 miles ago.

Better get it changed then :eek

I can't say i've ever come across diesel's turning the oil dirty before - with the exception of Saab 9-5's which are bad for that the oil should stay cleanish for a while.

10W-60 runs perfect in my E39 (petrol) it's REAL smooth now.

As regards the oil i looked good and hard for my 2000 530d with 160000 miles on the clock and went for castrol 5w40 fully synth from halfords. £40 for 4 litres so you'll need 2 as it holds about 7 litres. Not cheap and i'm still in shock having never paid anything like it for oil before but i suppose its the right stuff and should be good for a while now. It does seem a little more tappety when cold than before but sounds great when warmed up, nothing excesive though.

although bmw say 15000 miles between oil changes I Would do it every 8000 for the engines sake use quality oil and engine will last years.Oil should have been changed on inspection 2 along with plugs filters and a damn good check over.
