MY APOLOGIES I INITIALLY POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG SECTION

Ok, help me out here - where's the oil filter on my 530d? I've drained the oil, cleaned an absolutely filthy EGR valve, changed the air filter and then went to change the oil filter.

The only likely possibility I have found is just behind the power steering reservoir on the right hand side of the engine bay? It is kind of domed and has a 34mm+ hexagonal black plastic nut on top? I've stupidly tried releasing this nut with my plumbers pliers and it has cracked shattered!

Is this the casing for the oil canister?

I'm feeling very stupid for not being able to spot an oil filter........

Your oil filter is under the black cap with the 36mm nut on top, see here number 4 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DL72&mospid=47545&btnr=11_2328&hg=11&fg=30.

You will need a new top. #4. £17 from main dealer.

Appreciated Ronnie, best i get a 36mm socket and inspect the damage once removed. If terminal then i'll get a new cover from the stealer.

Removed the cover with a 36mm socket, fortunately i had only chipped the corner off one side of the hex and there is a plastic skin below it.

All in vain though as Wilco had provided me with the wrong filter! I've had to fill her with oil for work tomorrow so I wondered it it is on to change the filter once oil is added, I can't see areason why not........?

You will be fine changing the oil filter afters, and the filter is most likely a Quinton Hazell one that you got from Wilco.
