Hi all,

I have just had my 2001 X5 3.0 Petrol 5sp auto gearbox rebuilt.

The car originally was slipping from 2nd into 3rd and revving crazy, put lucas trans fluid was great for 1k then back to square 1. Fault code gear monitoring 2 was told REBUILD.

The gear box has been rebuilt, all clutch plates, 2nd gear drum, valve steams and seats, all speed sensors, and solenoids, oil seals torque converter, new oil, filter lock stock!! the box has nothing left from what the Garage claims to be rebuilt apart from shafts and box! lol.

Car still keeps jumping into trans safe mode, so software was updated as not been done since gods know when, and car doing the same. Garage are all out of ideas, pug plugged into diagnostics and still shooting up gear monitoring 2.

you can drive the car ok in manual by lay off gas going from 2nd to 3rd and bit temperamental in Drive. I did the gear box reset procedure, 30sec gas peadle, position 2 on key, then 10 secs brake and car was working loads better could rag it drove like it should in either drive or manual.

get back in car after shopping whilst in drive, straight into safe mode.!

Garage thinks its gearbox ECU i think however they have not done as they claim, ive not paid the bill yet and will not until its fixed....

Any one have any more ideas, gear box rebuild garage is back street but had good reviews, any ideas and help wanted many thanx

Not much help to you but my son has exactly the same problem in his 2001 e39 530 D - same gearbox - Had the gearbox and torque converter reconditioned at an Auto Gearbox specialist last week and after approx 50 miles the Transmission light is on and slipping mainly in 3rd gear. The car is driveable in manual mode but not perfect .

Must be a good source of income for gearbox specialists as they had 4 cars in the workshop and 2 were BMW's and one was a Range Rover (again same gearbox ). I saw him eyeing my X5 up too !

Taking the car back in tomorrow so if any developments I will post again.
