Temp needle jumps to red when I switch on ignition. DSC and brake warning light stays on. RPM and fuel economy meter dead, speedometer reading 80mph when true speed is more like 60mph. Digital clock dead. Indicators direction light dead but external indicator lights OK. Fuse checked - OK. Car runs perfectly after cutting out a few times on initial start up. Normally its an excellent starter. Local specialist autocare garage OBD verdict is car needs a new ECU - cost about £1200! I don't accept this advice. Although garage purports to be a BMW auto specialist it clearly hasn't the specialist equipment to realign the ECU/DDE with the cluster panel. The car is in excellent condition, low mileage and well maintained. It's too good to scrap. Looks like I may have to go to a BMW main dealer (ouch) to get the realignment done All advice gratefully accepted.

DSC and brake warning light stays on
I've had that happen a few times over the years and it's always been one of the wheel speed sensors/abs sensor. When one or more of them fail the handbrake light, brake light and traction control light will stay on.

If my memory serves me correctly the drive side rear is for the speedometer.

When my speedometer stopped working or behaving "strangely" and my dash lit up like a Christmas tree with all the warning light

I took the sensor out of the rear passenger side and put it into the drivers side (their exactly the same sensors) and the speedometer started working so I knew it was a faulty sensor on the drivers side.

If you don't have an obd scanner I'd get one and see for yourself what codes it shows
