2001 E46 330d auto; strong smell of diesel on start up? FIXED

This a new development but as in the title, there's a strong smell of diesel fuel in the cabin when I start the car. It dissappears after about 5 minutes but it's a very strong smell. I'll get it checked over but does anyone have any ideas?
cheers

Is the diesel smell in the car when you get in to start it up or appears when you start it up?

First place I'd look is under the bonnet as odours do travel into the cabin, then try the area around the pre supply pump. :thumbsup

Yes, the smell comes in the cabin during start up so it does sound like something to do with the pre supply pump. No other problems at the moment though. I'll check it this morning.

No, it's not the pump. Infact I found very little; no visable leak underneath, nothing under the engine cover for any clues. I could smell it walking around the front of the car as well. Even my local machanic couldn't find anything.

I'll drop it to the specialist when I get a chance I think.

Do they have breathers in the engine bay? is the fuel tank sound, think the tank sender is accessed from under the bench seat? It's got to be pre the high pressure side or you'd have running issues as well and one huge puddle in no time. I had return pipe faliure on a Volvo and lost 10l in no time at all!
