I have just done a test as i was sure my car was caning the oil.
Over 1000 miles it used about 1.3litres .
I'm using castrol magnatec 5w/30.
There are no oil leaks , it runs fine & does not appear to be smokin'
any ideas ?

That is well over bmw recommended oil useage be either rings or valve stem seals. Only way of checking is cylinder leakage test or head off measure bores and check seal if gone hard.

Wrong oil, it only meets ACEA A1, it has to meet ACEA A3 and LL01. It's to thin and worse the HTHS is to low so you get high consumption, increased shear, early onset of sludge and accelerated wear. Very few XW30 oils meet spec.

Christ! It seems BMW's are particular with their oils arent they?

I would probably just buy the most expensive appropriate oil you can get atm - is it Fully Synthetic 0w 40 or something?

M1 0W40 (dealership old oil choice), Castrol Edge 0W40 (dealership new oil choice), are but two widely used.

i found the consumption on my old 330 was marginally less with the Mobil 1 as opposed to the Castrol Edge but not by a lot but i was doing 3000 miles a month in it so it was adding up :hihi
