we have just purchased a 2001 318se auto and over the weekend was driving very well with no issues.

This morning we had to go to the hospital and after a short trip there and back the car had difficulty stating.

The symptons are that we put the key in the ignition and turned it round but no lights would light up on the dashboard, the stereo had no power and it seemed like all the power had gone.

Sometimes we could turn the key to the 2nd position and the stereo did come on and the dashboard lights illuminated but when we turned the key to the starter point all power dissapeared.

After about 10 minutes of trying it did all kick in and started again.

This seems to be an electrical problem and not an issue with the starter etc.

Is there any common faults that cause this that we can check/look into

Have you checked your connections on the battery?

Could be a ignition switch fault but they aren't common!
