Hi. When I turn it on it seems to make a rather annoying and loud gurgling or whining sound. Sometimes it sounds like a pigeon is stuck in there! It also seems to pump air out at the complete wrong speed. Even if I have it on really low it will pump air out at maximum speed but the temparature appears to be correct. The noise appears to be coming from the top of the dash area. The noise and speed problems have become very frequent now, pretty much everytime I use the climate control. Any suggestings of the cause and how to repair would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

2001 E46 318ci Coupe instructions for replacing final stage resistor

heeelp. im following the instructions from the link above to replace my final stage resistor but am completely stuck! as you can probably tell im a newbie to car repairs.

im upto the part where im trying to remove the motor housing so i can get to the actual fsr. iv removed the motor and one torx screw but cannot seem to find the second screw anywhere. iv tried to unclip the motor housing but its not coming loose. is there something im doing wrong? is the screw somewhere else?

below is a picture of how its looking now. the red circle shows where i took the one torx screw out from. i cant see the second one anywhere. please help urgently as i havent put it all back together again. Thanks again in advance!

There are two screws that hold the motor housing on, then you will need to wiggle it out carefully, it's difficult to see the top Torx screw holding the solenoid bracket in place, If you can carefully remove the solenoid (bottom piece of it first and then pop the top part off the bracket, careful not to lose the motor cog or the spring) you should be able to get a better visual of the FSR and it will make it much easier to unplug the harness. At the top of the solenoid bracket you should be able to feel 2 plastic fins. If you run your finger down between these fins you find find the Torx screw at the end. Run your Torx driver down this groove and gently move the tip of the Torx driver until it sits into the screw and away you go. When putting it back in use a magnetised Torx driver or you'll never get it on the threads. Also be extremely careful when re-assembling the solenoid, there is only one right way to do this: Place the top part of the solenoid into the bracket and click it into place. Then carefully slide the shaft of the motor (Bottom part of solenoid) into the cogs above until it clicks into place with the mechanism. This might require you to squeeze the 2 parts together a little to make the clips catch.

thanks guys. u guys have been awesome! i still found it really tricky to get to that second screw so popped it into a garage who charged only 30 quid to change the part although it too the poor guy about hour and a half to do but its working perfect now :thumbsup
