Hi everyone I'm new here...Just bought blue 01' 530d SE AUTO Saloon with 95k miles on it...there wasn't service book in a car so I don't know what's the story...I've talked to mechanic, who usually fixes my cars, he told that need to change every possible filters - engine oil&filter, fuel filter, air filter, and crank case filter on rocker cove(?)...I don't know what to start with? what about gearbox oil? Any suggestions everyone? Happy New Year!!!

Crank case filter is a good idea or it can give you turbo trouble in the future, number 15 here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DL72&mospid=47545&btnr=11_2316&hg=11&fg=15.

Gearbox oil is supposed to be lifetime oil but many like to change it as NO oil is lifetime, problem with changing gearbox oil is you should do gearbox filter and that can be pricey on top of the oil, #6 here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DL82&mospid=47545&btnr=24_0996&hg=24&fg=15, price £56, you also need to know how to change it and refill it so double check with him

And happy new year :cool

If you do not have any history with the car then give bmw a call and see what was done on the car last time it was with them - it could be that it has not been in to a dealership in ages - you could also ask them what would be covered in a inspection 2 service and then get your mechanic to do that for you. This covers most filters and oils - as for the gearbox I was quoted 195 for a service (at an auto transmission specialist) which I will have done within the next couple of months.

Hey Bumer5 happy new year mate

Just to add to Mtec and Ronnie's advice - I would be tempted to obtain as much info as poss from the dealer and try and get a good will kinda gesture from them if you want them to do everything.

The important thing tho is at every 3 services the fuel filter is required to be changed. It may be worth you biting the bullet and seeing a dealer? Or pester them for as much car background info as poss. Red :)

Thank you guys for response...what sort of oil should I be using, any particular brands? 2 days later(!) noticed that rear parking sensors don't work, I've read it is a common problem. Is it hard(£) to fix?
Cheers

Use Castrol Edge LL04 0w 30w is what the dealer is splashing all over ther service / reception area. Double check with them and ask them what oil your car need as you want to keep a top up bottle handy.

Parking sensor failure isn't a common problem! Was it working before? Is the car out of a dealer / private under warranty? Do you have front and rear?

Can you hear clicking noises from the sensors? Sorry too many q's! Red :)

Hi Red no warranty...rear sensors only...there is a standard long beep noise/flashing button when i put in reverse but that's it... will 7-8k miles be ok between oil changing?
Thanks

Yes 7 or 8k changes are fine mate but the oil i mentioned is supposed to be good for 15 - 16k as per dealer servicing - your choice. You certainly won't do any harm changing oil at around 7k

You didn't mentione if the rear parking sensors were working before.

Check the simple things like:
Fuses
reverse light bulbs coming on?
Check i-series options for parking sensor distance (reset it to default)
is the sensor area clean and free of muck?
Can you engage reverse and walk round the car? Does anything beep when you do this?

Red :)

Hi Red sensors didn't work with me...just walked around the car with reverse engaged - lights ok, sensors clean, no sound at all...will take a closer look at the weekend...
Thanks mate:thumbsup

Bumer5 - remember that if you get the dealer to change the oil you can supply the oil yourself - but be warned the stuff they put in is not cheap - I supplied the oil on the last time my 525d went in and it cost me nearly 90 quid for 8 litres at halfrauds - so as red said it should last 15 or 16k between changes.
