Hiya, have joined the forum for some much needed help, have an E46 328i Se Touring, and we came home from xmas holidays, only to to find the car has gone into limp mode, we took it to a garage , they couldnt fix it, got the rac man round and he read the fault codes, he said it was a throttle sensor, so he towed my poor car to a bmw specialist in Northampton, they told me to get a new throttle body!! I sourced a second had one, from a great bmw breakers, took it to the garage , now have waited all week for it to return, rang them, they now say it wasnt the throttle body (GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR) and are scratching there heads.... Please somebody shed some light!!!!, i have recentlty been made redundant so funds are tight, but having already paid one garage to do some work(well no work) im going to get stuck with another huge bill , any advise would be greatly appreciated.mark:thumbsup

I got them a second hand throttle body, but they still cant get it out of limp mode

I'm not very mechanically minded but the second hand throttle body did it come with it's own potentiometer as that is what is showing to be faulty throwing up code 171 implausable value also have they checked the wiring for cracks as that could be causing the short.

Oh and welcome to bimmerforums hope your back on the road soon mate

hopefully they will have it sorted soon, the throttle body came with the potentiometer, but i saw it on a car running before they bmw breakers took it off, cant afford to get it fixed now as was on limited budget due to situation.

I had the same problem once on e46, it turned out to be the ECU (DME). That sorted the problem for me. It might be a good idea for you to borrow one from someone and check that and see if it hepls!!!!

Ideally it would need better BMW spec diagnostics (their kit is pulling BMW codes, just giving the OBD2 name also, so it's not a bad code reader)

With a higher grade, there should be outputs of what the car can see / understand from each potentiometer.
