hi guys..i have 318i SE 2000 petrol manual model..i had the MOT done in september which i passed without any problems and inspection 1 on the 7th of this month...last night the car started shaking a bit when i was waiting at the lights and as soon as i drove off it stopped...this morning the same happened again while i was stuck in traffic and then the yellow warning light came on for 'exhaust emission values deteriorated'
i have spoken to my indy dealer (PMW CHELMSFORD who did the service) and was told that it could be the oxygen sensor and its best not to drive...

what do u guys think...a little search on the forums indicates that this could have happened because of supermarket fuel which i have been using for almost over an year...if thats caused the problem what fuel should i use in the future...
will techron cleaner will do any trick or i should just take it to the dealer...and also any ideas of the cost?

thanks in advance...

First things first dude..................STOP USING CHEAP ASS SUPERMARKET FUEL!!
that stuff is so unpredictable- you don't know what you are getting..........remember that fiasco with Tesco a few years back.

But seriously though just stick to regular unleaded from the likes of BP, Shell, Esso, etc

The other thing........that EML light could be anything- don't guess on what the dealer says about the O2 sensor.................it could be the O2 sensor or it could be a dozen other sensors. Get the error codes read from a decent Independant BMW specialist......the error code/s stored will shed light on whats wrong with the car:thumbsup

As for it being safe to drive...........can't really say dude without looking at it for myself.

how is it driving now? does it idle ok?

are you gonna take it to a dealer or an Independant?...........I would take it to an independant and get the diagnostic done- it will be cheaper and more times than not you'll get a better service from the indies.

where abouts in London are you?...........could recommend somewhere decent

That's what I thought...Tesco/Sainsburys usually bid for the best price from a major supplier.

mmmmhh..............I'm sure I heard something different from someone in "the know":D........and this was even before the Tesco thing.

there was something to do with the way the fuel is tested for minimum octane levels......can't really remember but anyhow guy's- I certainly won't be running my pride and joys on that stuff.

May be a sensor fault like camshaft sensor or a air leak caused by a split hose/induction pipe or breather pipe.

Get the ECU fault codes read at a good BMW specialists or main dealer and post them up here

hi guys...update on my car..had it fixed by PMW Chelmsford on thursday..the problem was air leak on the inlet manifold...they also changed the camshaft sensor [£70] (i believe this was why the engine was shaking at idle), inlet manifold breather valve and pipe [£48] for the total cost of 287.90 of which 132 was labour (charged me £60/hourly rate for diagnosis)...
