I have been experiencing a knocking sound when I select gears (most noticably first) on my 2000 318Ci and have put this down to diff mountings. However, I was speaking to a friend who had a 2000 328Ci just over a year ago who told me that he brought his to the main BMW dealer and they fixed it free of charge, as it is a major fault. Is this normal, or is there maybe more to his story?

I get a knock when changing gear, noticeable from 1st 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I was told it could be the clutch.

I have the exact same problem with my 1999 323se. Have jacked it up and found a split in main diff mount. Would realy like your friends story to be true because it looks a nitemare to replace!

I don't see why it shouldn't be true. The only reason he found out about it, is because another friend of his, with a 3-series coupe, had a really bad accident because of it, and he was told it should have been fixed by BMW. Sounds like some sort of extended warranty thing. Apparently it covers them til over 100k.
