The car is sat on a smallish drive. Already stripped interior, boot and a few other bits. I need to get stuck in proper over the next week or two but getting the engine/diff/prop etc off is seeming a bit daunting. What is the best way to go about this. I have axle stands but no block and tackle to lift the engine out.

easiest way is to lift the engine and box out in one, drop them both on a trolley and lift the car front end up so the engine and box just slides out.
