im a newbie so take it easy lol,

im a novice in the mechanic world so i dont know much

when coasting along at around 60mph the car starts to misfire and judder
this only happens intermittently and is not always at 60
do we have any ideas what it could be, there is no engine managment light that comes on either.

Need to get the codes read mate. Even if the light is not on.

Best guess would be an air leak in the system gaz. But as Slacker says, get the codes read.

im thinking this as i have had the air flow meter changed, the car ran a hell of a lot better but the mis firing is still there, are there any common air hose problem areas on these?

goin to get the codes read tomorro from a friend, i dnt think its gonna bring anythin up to be honest so i think its gonna be a case of trying to find a air leak, just out of curiosity, could this be a coil pack problem?

im new to this site today, I have a 320ci (2200cc) and i also get a random misfire but with mine i get the engine management light come on too, i'm going to get it plugged in somewhere and see what they come up with,
It seems to happen at hi (ish) revs, if i stick below 4000 rpm i can drive it all day no problems, if i put my foot down to boot it the light comes on and car starts missing badly, i normally turn the engine off and coast along then turn ignition back on let the clutch out and im away again, to me that sounds like some sensor or something? or possibly the coil pack??

any ideas or has anyone had a similar issue???

my car is a 2001 on an X plate,

Coil pack will flag up as fault if car codes are read.

Like you said, best to get the codes read first.

righto, bit of an update, mainly to let people where im upto incase it helps them in the future also to see if this triggers anything in peoples minds.

the car seems to only do it when i am coasting along at 60-70, then if i try to put my foot down a bit it gets worse, or even if i lay off the revs a bit but keep it pressed the car still mis fires, if i boot the car it wont mis fire, by mis fire i mean as if its literrrally running on 3 cylinders, also my fuel consumption is like this full tank (approx 50 quid)
im getting maximum 350 miles, is this right? i think its quite thirsty?

it could be that the maf is giving spurious readings...you'll need a live check to see if thats the case

hi all, been a while to get this done but i have finally had my car codes read

codes are as follows

P0110
P0101

they are both to do with air flow but cant remember what it said

P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem...ie maf not working properly.
P0110 Intake Air Temperature Circuit Malfunction...check the iat is plugged in...if so,new one needed.

do u have a part number for both these or better still the best place to buy them from so i dont get nailed by the stealers!

most sensors are best sourced from a dealers...but i would think the iat would be fine from gsf or eurocarparts tbh.
the maf should be available from most motor factors but insist on bosch...bosch are temperamental enough,but the pattern mafs are made from chocolate and will not last.

would u start with the iat and is it simple to fit or are they a pain?

remember im a real novice with not a lot fo mechanical knowledge,
so is it something i would be able to do myself, by this i mean is it as easy as changing the maf sensor?

You need to get the codes read using a BMW specific scanner, those codes you have are EOBD codes, so they will not show all the faults that are stored on your BMW's ECU.

Any BMW Independent specialist will be able to do this for you

And on your car the IAT sensor is built in with the MAF. But I'd really get the BMW codes read.

hi all, thanks for the replies, im hoping this cures it but i have found a corroded hose on my car, this hose is located on a breather at the end of the injector rail, which on my car is right there in front of you when you open the bonnet lol,

this is all just a quick update to see if it helps others in the future

but i shall report back to let you know the out come when i have chance to drive the car properly in a situation that causes the mis fire, thanks
