I've just bought and fitted a set of used 17 inch alloy wheels to my car,

All tires are the same and they are fitted on the right sides of the car as it says on the side of the tire

The problem I have is when I am acelarating to 60 and beyond my steering vibrates and picks up every bump in the road.

The wheels were on eBay as previously fitted to a e36 and the fit my e46. The spigot ring matches up, I'd say though if I was being picky I could fit a horses hair between the centre spigot and wheel.

This wouldn't cause it in my opinion though but I could be wrong, I just feel theres no way I'm getting a spigot ring in there, So what my be the cause of the problem?

I've also read it could be a seized brake but both my front wheels when jacked up spun freely

It wasn't doing this with my old original 15 inch wheels on.

Maybe the wheels need balancing or need your tracking doing

i had a similar problem, steering wheel was vibrating so much above 55mph I actually pulled over and checked my wheel bolts to make sure a wheel wasn't about to fall off!

got it rebalanced and there was a huge pothole dent on the inside of the front wheel, i've got alot of weights on it to balance it out and that wheel went on the back and its perfectly smooth now.

Time isn't on my side at the moment,, I do know a good tire place who does a good job but I won't be able to get the tires checked till Thursday, I'm hoping it is the wheels like a simple balancing

Should I be ok at slow speeds?

I've just got back from a small drive after having the two front wheels balanced and it did help the problem a bit but it's not gone away completely.

The reason I didn't have the rears done was a didn't think it would change the outcome of the steering?

Am I right

Update time,

I've had all the wheels balanced and it's still happening so like the advice says I'm going to get the tracking done tomorrow.

Just as more information - the car doesn't pull to one side while driving or heavy breaking!

More ideas would be helpful cheers

I've done a search on the forum and it seems it happens alot with the e46's and it seems to all point at the front bushes, Which I should check too

Do these cars have ball joints? My old rover 400 did and it had the same problem

I've just got it back from the BMW specialist and he said theres excessive movement from the lower ball joint o/s/f, Getting it changed on Monday with a few other things and hopefully I'll have a great car again,

It's not cheap though, And as every small thing gets found out about my car I hate the person more and more who sold it to me lol.

Right ive decided to update this thread as it's the same problem.

I've had the ball joint changed but that didn't help, so I put the original 15'' wheels back on and since then it stopped vibrating, or at least it wasn't noticeable.

Because of that I put it down to being sold a dodgy set of wheels that mustve been buckled or dodgy tires,

So now after a while of no problems I decided to buy another different but original 17'' bmw wheels and fitted them yesterday,

I've gotthe same problem with the wheels vibrating. Even around 50 it happens. Just along as I'm cruising at a steady speed,

So any help would be great guys

Summary - happens when I have 17's. But not15's

Do you feel vibration through the steering wheel or the seat? And did you get the new wheels balanced and tracked?

I fitted them yesterday so havnt had chance to get them balanced or tracked, Its on my todo list, I thought I'd get this thread up again in the mean time.

I did get my last 17' wheels balanced but that didn't help,

And the vibration is only through the steering wheel

Right I've had the two front wheels balanced and the tracking done and that seems to have cured the vibrations, The garage said it was way out, So I thought nice one,

Now its pulling to the right and the steering wheel doesn't sit centre, only by two or three mil.

I rang the garage and they said because it was so far out the tracking, it could've been like that for ages and messed with the steering wheel, Those r my words and not a quote,

Mire than likely they didn't keep the steering wheel straight when doing the alignment it happens all the time

Should I take it back and ask for a four wheel alignment? Or take it to somewhere else?.

I do remember asking about the diferance between two and four wheel and the woman receptionist (who was fit as k) it doesn't need a full one.
