Hi Guys, this is going to be long because I want to describe every thing in detail. I had a very bad experience this evening! i was stuck in traffic, and decided to turn off the engine to save some fuel. the headlights went off by themselves even though the switch was still on. When i tried restarting, the engine would not start. I tried again and all hell broke loose! When I turned on the key, the rev counter would go all the way to the end and back agian, the temparature gauge went all the way to the maximum, then the engine would start for a while and the ASC light(the one with an arrowed ring round the warning triangle sign) would come on and then the engine would die after about 30 seconds. There were some clicking sounds coming from behind the passenger side of the dashboard. This happened about four times. I then called the breakdown service, who advised they would be an hour. After thirty minutes I tried to start the car again and this time it started, but was rough in idle, though the engine remained running and the warning light did not come on. I revved slightly and it held steady in idle. When the breakdown man arrived there were no signs of the problems. The car drove smoothly home. What I need to know is if anyone has any ideas about what could have happened there and whether I need to be concerned about anything/ take some precaution. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would have the fault codes read for the car as it should be your first port of call. Any good BMW specialist or main dealer will be able to do this for you :thumbsup

When the engine died what happened if you gave the car some welly to try keep it going?

I assume welly means putting my foot on the accelerator. It did not have any effect. the engine justs tayed dead.

If when the engine was trying to die you gave it some welly(pressed the accelerator) and nothing happened then it sounds like a electrical problem rather than a fuel problem, if it was a fuel problem it should try and catch slightly then die

Clicking

Hi There, Youn Probably know what it is by now, but i had a similar problem a while ago and it was only a Relay (Fuel Pump 1) that went, that then put more pressure on the other Relays (Fuel Pressure Regulator etc) To 'Try & Keep up' with the Broken 1 Resulting in Driving Like a Dog & Cutting out after so long is just a safety feature, Hope you got it all solved as it shouldn't cost much to put Right, Happy & Safe Driving Regards RYAN
