Good Afternoon
I have just bought this weekend a very nice 523i Auto Saloon. 123000 miles. I drove it from Newbury and all was fine until I got to about 5 miles from home ( about 230 miles) when the car started misfiring. At tickover it seems lumpy. The wierd thing was if I went into manual mode and increased the revs it seemed OK. Temp gauge seems to vary slightly, going from normal down to just above cold although the water level is fine and not dropped and oil not contaminated.
Any thoughts?

I would get the codes read on the car to see if any faults are present. The fluctuating temp guage may be due to a faulty thermostat. This will probably be picked up as a fault since it is a MAP one.

Thanks. Would that give eneven running. I gather that a fault code such as this can lead to running probs. Car is very odd, since my last post it now seems to be running ok in tiptronic mode but very erratic in proper auto mode!

Took it to a BMW specialist I have found in Cambridge and its an air leak on the inlet side which is causing the rough running and misfire. No bad codes showing up and the engine light not triggered yet but its surprising how much transmission vibration this has set up due to the vibration. Car is only on 5 cylinders intermittently. Getting it done monday so report back if all ok

Will most likely be the induction pipe between the MAF and the inlet manifold or the crankcase breather, let us know what they find :)

Well Ronnie you were spot on!
Split induction pipe between MAF and blocked breather!
And one coil on pot 6.
On further investigation someone already changed the coil on pot 3 recently.
Slightly suspicious of the prevous owner as according to the specialist the diagnostics show failures but no dash light was on. The dash light has 'malfunctioned' which apparently never happens!
Gearbox fine.Phew!
Next job is worn lower link.
