Had my thermostat replaced yesterday (due to no heating and car only warming up to quarter, thermostat had broken inside). Also had oil and filters changed, noticed before the service it had a bit of gunk under the oil filler cap so cleaned off, drove 10 miles to see if heater gets hot and i does now and stays steady at half on the guage, but i still have gunk under oil cap and tiny beads of moisure, i havent really used the car for 2 weeks, only to shops and back, small trips, does anyone have any views on this

MARCE39, what you are experiencing is a build up of condensation which is mainly the result of very short journeys:thumbsup

If you have any head gasket concerns that take the vehicle to a Independent BMW specialist and ask them to perform a "SNIFF" test

i hope so thanks for reply, i mite take it for a good drive tomorrow see what happens, i was a bit concerned before the thermostat replacement but atleast it had broken and the new one fixed that problem.

Yeah I agree with A20 RYM its definately just a moisture build up due to the lack of use / short journeys.

Agreed with the above posts. Ever since your thermostat stuck open you have been driving round with a cold engine. Don't expect it all to dissapear after a long run though. it may take quite a while.

If you can be bothered and it never hurts to, try an oil change to reduce the moisture content. Also water in oil even tiny amounts creates an inverse emulsion which thinkens the oil, which as we all know is not good.
