I have had problems with abs/asc which caused the cap to go into limp mode,i replaced the abs module and it cleared the abs/asc lights but car has remained in limp mode and on further diagnostics i am now getting a fault with the solonoid on the auto gearbox which is keeping the car in limp mode.we wondered if the original problem has caused the solonoid to stick open? has anyone ever come across this problem if so how did you cure it and whereabouts on gearbox is the solonoid located?

cheers for any advice,

dave

1999 E39 520 Auto box solonoid appears to be stuck = limp mode

Hi Dave,

I have a similar problem.

My car (2001 525) tripped into failsafe several times when the ABS/ASC tripped but reset when I switched off and restarted the car.

Then it happened and won't reset. ABS module now rebuilt and sorted and disconnected battery and touch terminals to try to clear codes but still stuck in fail-safe mode with dash light on.

Did you get your car sorted Dave, and if so what was the issue and costs? Looking for some ideas as I need to get the codes read.

Thanks, Matt.

The front wheel sensors on the E39 feed input info into the ECU to allow the shift points of the transmission to be determined. A faulty wheel sensor which throws up the ABS warnign light can make the transmission shift roughly or not at all.

A pressure solenoid is buried deep inside the brains within the autobox. They can be replaced by an automatic transmission specialist, who can diagnose the problem for you. Take it to a transmission specialist for a proper diagnoses.

I had these solenoids replaced on my E39, big bill as it included an overhaul of the valvebody, new filter and fluid etc. £702 six years ago.
