Hi, i'm repairing some rust on my car, and wanted to clarify a couple of points please - im confused about the application of metallic paint. Halfords says to 1200 grit the base coat before the clearcoat, but it looks awful and i can find no other reference to this.

Is that correct?

Are the steps:

1 - primer
2 - base coat
3 - clear coat

or,
1 - primer
2 - clear coat
3 - 1200 grit to make it matt
4 - clear coat

Ok think i have my answer found elsewhere... posting here for other's benefit if they come across this..

Halfords are talking bollix and step 3 1200 grit is not required.

Right i've done the base coats, and two coats of lacquer

The clearcoat has dried nicely, and i'm happy with the finish as it goes... but, the finish is MATT!

What have i done wrong, or is this expected, and it buffs up in polish stage?

Looks kind of cool, but I wanted it shiney!

ok i dont think i put enough lacquer on, so it looks better now.. hope it sticks though

hmm the bits i havent painted look like an old honda with its lacquer peeling off.. the bits i did paint look awesome!!

What gives?

This is how i would complete an area

primer
Rub down
Tack cloth
colour x 3 coats
rub down but only when completely dry, which also give a key for the clear
Tack cloth
clear coat x 3
then a cut and polish to the clear coat mate to finish, again only when completley dry
