What size is the E39's rear diff? 188mm or 210mm?

I've checked on Real OEM, they list the same diff housing gasket as the E46 3 series and the Z4 - I'm trying to find a likely place to source a compatible LSD - even if it means swapping over the internals. :thumbsup

If i'm correct, you'll need an M3 evo 210mm diff and a rear cover plate from an M5, although that was 540 stuff.

I'm expecting the 535i to have the same diff. A 530i I was under at the weekend had a massive diff which looked to be 210 sized.
The cover gasket is the same on the 530i and 535i. But the 540 seems different?

Is the diff casing the same on 535's, 540's, M5'sand M3 Evo's - just not the covers?

Maybe the 540 has more of an M5 type diff

note part 19 - lock ring for 168 or 188 diffs

BMW seem to be doing diffs in new sizes, like the 215mm although I have seen details of an evo diff fitted to a 540i.
Am I right I thinking that the E36's medium case diff is 188mm (with the four-cylinders using 166)? And the Evo uses a larger case diff (which is why they're not a direct retrofit without subframe)?

Do you think I could use a medium-case E36 diff with the cover and flanges changed?
