Just had this car a couple of weeks and came across a couple of niggles.

The engine seems to hunt revs when it is cold revving from about 1000rpm to 1500 then back down below 750rpm before finally settling at about 800 rpm. It has even cut out once since doing this.

I wondered if anyone has any ideas as it has also only return 15mpg. Put £25 of petrol in the other day and petrol light back on after only 80 miles!!

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Hi there, the symptoms you describe sounds like the well known 'vanos' problem. It is widely known, if you speak to bmw the won't admit there was ever a problem, but they will sell you a new vanos unit for £500 odd+VAT. The simple fact is that there are a set of seals that degrade with time, according to reports maybe even as early as 2 years old ! There is a place in America where you can order a seal kit, which is about £60, and this uses teflon seals for improved life span. Have a look at this, for a more indepth explanation.

http://beisansystems.com/

This is the place you can order the kit from, there is also a step by step guide on the internet somewhere, showing how to fit them, does'nt look the easiest job, but if your competent shouldn't be to bad. Hope this helps mate :thumbsup

Took it to my garage who couldn't find anything wrong with it but told me to take it to a BMW specialist (what hope have you got when he hasn't even heard of a Vanos unit!!)

Booked it in this week to DeutscheTek as the guy there basically gave me the same answer as lambda sensor or possible vacuum leak. Going to do a full diagnostic and smoke test.

Will keep you all informed, thanks for the help.

The OP stated hunting revs on cold engine, which is typical of the vanos units ! Mine does exactly that, but does NOT rattle on start up. The car will also cut from time to time if left on idle from cold. He may have, as you both say, a problem with the lambda sensors, but i'd put my money he's also got the vanos problem too, which is also noted to make the car use more fuel !!!

Got the car back from the garage and they have replaced the crank case breather valve. They did a smoke test and then showed me the old one which was full of crud loked like someone had been cooking chips in it!! :lol

Car runs sweet as a nut now, which is good as it took a couple of hours to remove and refit the manifold!

Just got some petrol so will wait and see what the difference is.

Cheers
