Just a little annoying thing, my interior light works fine, when i shut the door and turn the engine on the light turns off. Whey! Untill i have driven for about 2 minutes then it comes back on and stayes on. Boo!
I had the same problem in my 1991 e36 325i , where i would drive along and my interior light would come on then not turn off.An annoying problem. After much diagnosing and false information. (many tecs will say to replace the interior light dimming modual) I found my problem was the (passenger door side ) switch in the door striker catch plate/or bolt as some people call it on the central body pillar. The switch does not go in far enough when you shut the door to switch the light off . You go over a small bump and the light comes on. You can try adjusting the plate to improve the situation but this could put your door out of alignment when you shut it. The real problem is that the plastic or rubber coating on the door lock mechanism which hooks around the pillar striker bolt is worn or broken. It only has to be worn a couple of millimeters to give you this problem. You can change the lock mechanism at great expense or do what i did cost 4 dollars.
Open the door.
With a screw driver push the lock mechanism back to simulate that the door is in the closed lock position. (In this position you can see the area of the lock mechanism that is made of rubber/plastic that hooks around the striker bolt when the door closes. The rubber is so worn that there is not enough there to push the switch in all the way to turn off the light. I cut a 1/2 cm piece of nylon tie strap that is as wide as the mechanism,and they happen to be just the right thickness and resin glue ( i used 5min aradite)it to this area.Make sure the area your going to glue the piece too is very clean or the glue wont stick. use prepsol / household spray cleaner then Metholated spirit for final clean. Put the glue on the serrated part of the tie strap piece as this helps adhesion. Only use a very small amount of glue and make sure none over flows over the edges as this will effect the locking mechanism if it dries. Let the glue harden. . Keep working the mechanism so to check that every thing is free and not binding any where. If it is it is probably due to excess glue. Clean or trim the excess before it fully hardens. Lube well the area with grease and oil. Problem will be fixed. Ps make sure you have the lock in the open door position before you attempt to shut the door. It worked for me and its been 2 months now and no problems.
