ok this is really messed up... i was driving down the dual carriage way around 60mph, ive got half tank petrol. all of a sudden the petrol gauge went all the way down and the light came on, here i am thinking what the f**k i just had half tank. wierd right? then i topped up £20 still the gauge is empty. theres no leaks or nothing.... what isit, see im new to the BMW scene, so guys any advice or recommandations where i can get it fixed is well appreciated, plz plz plz help .... thank youuu

Try this for me, Do a binnacle test, Hold down the mileage reset button with the ignition off, turn the ignition key to position 1, Wait for TEST to appear and then release reset button, watch as the binnacle does a self test.

If gauges move then they are fine.

You then need to look at the senders in the fuel tank, http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-31-Fuel-Pump/101-Projects-31-Fuel-Pump.htm

The senders should have a smooth fall and rise in resistance if you measure the resistance on the pins and move the sender float up and down.

Also could you remember to add the vehicle details in the thread title next time as per forum rules please, they have been done for you this time. It makes it far easier for people looking up help for their own problems or conversions.

hey thanks for the advise, sorry for not adding the details (thank you). i have tried the test and all the needles seem to be fine moving themselves, so im gessing its the senders or something. i have looked through the link you have sent me, i wont be doing this myself, knowing me i'll screw something up lol. during the week i might have to go to some garages to fix this problem. does anyone know roughly how much this will cost to replace/fix/repair?

It may just be something simple like the wire broke just under the sender top, common with age, You will still probably get charged a hours labour maybe more though.

All depends on the fault and the labour rate

i've got the exact same prob, all the gauges worked in the test, so gonna check the resistance at the senders at the end of the wk

ok new update had some time today... i took the cover off and found the wires.. they seem fine. so its not the gauge.. the wires seem ok hasnt come off... so what next haha... btw jons have you sorted yours out?

ello mate, sorry not had time to sort it yet, works gone hectic, will def get on the case over nxt few days tho, is'nt nice not knowing how much fuel i got!
