Which pump has been changed ? the lift pump in tank or the injector pump bolted on the engine ?,now in my experience the lift pump in tank cannot cause the high revs as when it fails or gets to just running slow, the injector pump will try to draw fuel itself and will draw air in from wherever it can and this results in rough tickover and jerky throttle response with periods of normal driving but lack of power quite often. My new lift pump failed thursday night (lasted 40k),symptoms of fuel starvation so a new fuel filter fitted with no joy and now lift pump is main culprit, these pumps only put out around 6psi but the inj pump needs the fuel to cool and lubricate it and I believe it needs that low pressure to be able to actually function properly.I have had enough of the lift pumps on these and am going to fit a facet solid state fast road pump, found about fitting one to a tds on vegetable oil diesel .co.uk (google replacing lift pump with facet). One symptom of the lift pump going home is often the car feels underpowered every so often, this is caused by the ecu switching the pump off and on on a warm engine dictated to the ecu by a fuel pressure switch in the filter head, because the pump is getting tired the fuel does not get up front quick enough and a small drop in power can be noticed until it eventually gives up and then the inj pump try's to draw it own fuel using vacuum and then draws air in,lots of air can be seen flooding through the clear pipe to inj pump on mine at the moment. So lift pump symptoms are odd lack of power at times leading to rough jerky running and tickover can be raised to a rough 11/1200 interspersed with normal tickover or running depending how much fuel the inj pump has at the time,I could go out and start mine now and it will sit and purr, even until its warm, but if I give it a rev at any time then it draws the air in and starts to shake.I will do another post in a few minutes concerning inj pump.
