alrighty
right i was on my way to work this morning about 20 mins into my drive and when i would accelerate the car felt as if it had lost power. when i stopped and revved the car it wouldnt rev past 3-3.5k rpm and it was putting out alot of white smoke i thought it was the crankshfat sensor but it seemed like the engine was being held back rather than it hitting the limiter i turned the engine off and back on and it would rev all the way up to 6.5-7k without a problem but when i started driving back the car felt down on power. ive got a funny feeling the cat is shagged so im going to rip the innards out and see if that makes a difference on the way back the car didnt overheat once and there is no misfires its also gone through alot of oil as well i topped it up on friday to the maximum line and now its down to about a 1/4 above the minimum (if that makes any sense)

Personally I would advise you have a diagnostic scan performed on the vehicle:thumbsup

It could be cam/crank sensors or even a coil pack. A sensor sounds more likely I must admit.

Air leaks within the system can cause all sorts of upsets with the running of the engine so it will be very worth while checking all the air pipes:thumbsup

Have you noticed any signs of oil leaking from the engine?

Have you checked that oil is not present within the coolant?

A cat wouldn't unblock just from turning off the ignition so I wouldn't go ripping the cat apart just yet.

Get a fault code scan as mentioned first and then post up here :thumbsup any BMW specialist or main dealer will be able to oblige.

got it sorted
it was the cat, i have been suspecting the cat for a while as there was a rattling in the exhaust and on that morning on my way to work it eventually blocked the exhaust causing a loss in power and the engine sounded like a wet fart.

when i stopped the car and revved it it wouldnt pull past 3-3.5k it sounded like the engine was being strangled. so after turning it off for a few minutes and turning it back on the car would rev all the way but wouldnt make any power when driving and was still sounding like a wet fart.

managed to get it to a mates work where we had a closer look being taking the exhaust off and found someone had already knocked the cat through but had left half of it still in the exhaust and this is what caused the whole shenanigans in the first place.

i fitted the new exhaust today but the gasket i got with the down pipe looks like stevie wonder made it without a template none of the bolt holes line up and the main holes are about 5mm too small so i had to reuse the old one so it ticks a wee bit but ill get that sorted,

as for the cam/crank sensors and the coil pack it has had the cam sensor and the coil pack changed for other problems and when i bought it the engine leaked oil like a rusty sieve so i had some new gaskets and the pipe from the air mass meter as well as it was fecked but today i realised the sump gasket is leaking :hissyfit so its another job for the weekend

it just never ends :frown
