Afternoon all,

on my 328 touring there is a rattly noise coming from somewhere around the gearbox area (it seems!) when the car is in neutral with the engine running. If i get in the car and depress the clutch pedal then the noise goes away.
I've spoken to a couple of people and it has been suggested that it is either the clutch release bearing or that a plate that is supposed to protect the cat(s) is loose and rattling on the underside of the car. Of the 2 suggestions the first seems more likely to me, but i was wondering is anyone here had any ideas what it could be?

An alternative suggestion was that one fo the springs in the clutch plate had broken, but from reading on the thread about lightened flywheels in the tuning section of this board it seems there aren't any springs in the standard clutch plate. is this correct?

It's been like this for some time (6 months?) clutch seems to operate as it should despite the noise. i'm just a little worried that at some point there will be an almighty bang and it'll stop working altogether.

The car has done just over 170k if that makes a difference...

cheers,

MArk.

I have the same issue mate ive been told its the clutch release bearing as ther made from plastic and do go and is common apparently

That sounds horrendous, and not like a thrust bearing at all. My son's 328 has the thrust bearing problem, and has been checked by specialist to confirm this, and will be getting a new clutch pack done at the same time while the gearbox is out.
I would get yours looked at soon, before it goes bang on you!
