Hi guys,

I hope i have put this post in the right place. I have 95 reg e36 1.6l compact. Just last year i changed the engine ( same size but out of a 96 reg). I got it running with next to no difficulty and was running fine. I had to change the clutch and after which, was still running ok. Not long after i tried starting the car only to find that it wasn't turning over. It occurred to me that the starter motor may have been lose (i had not tighten it properly after the clutch was changed). I bumped started her down the drive, she started fine, Turned off, turned her on and she turned over fine. So i took her for a drive, went into town, came back to find the car wouldn't turn over again. I bumped started her to get her home.

So i got her home and looked under the car to see that all the bolts where tight and in place. I still had the starter motor from the old engine (which did work) so i went about putting this on, but to no avail. So i removed the starter motor again from the bell housing but left the wires connected my friend however was trying to start the car too see if we could see it spin. After maybe 20 attempts ( all the while i was pulling the dam thing into position so i could see it) it did spin ( nearly taking my hand off). So with the good news, i put it back together and to no surprise, bloody thing stopped working!! I don't understand how the unit managed to work that one time, could it of earthed itself against the engine??

If anyone has any suggestions of what could be wrong it would be really appreciated, thanks in advance

might be sticking when it wont start smack the stater with a hammer but not to hard and try it again if it then starts you will no it needs a clean (use half a gallon of petrol) this has worked for me in the past

Petrol probably isn't the best thing to use to clean out a motor,

Turn key, spark from brushes/stator, boom! FIRE!!!!!! :rofl


howellsy1, have you checked for voltage on the solenoid wire each time the starter has failed? (use a test light)
