Hi

First off read the forum posting rules please

http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f74/bimmerforums-uk-forum-guidelines-t2257/

I have moved this thread to the E36 tech forum and given it a useful title. :thumbsup

The key has a transponder coded into it.

I think Timpsons have the equipment to copy a new key but you will have to ring your local branch and check.
Otherwise its BMW dealers...

Your key won't be coded so you will be fine there, just need to get it cut or go to the dealers who can sort you one out
Correct, It's the EWS II system that was introduced around 1995 that causes problems.

If you have an original key then all you need to do is get replacements cut:thumbsup
