Hi guys tried to get my 325 coupe MOTed and it only failed on emissions. i think the MAX is 0.3% and mine was 2.8%. The guy said it could be the lampda sensor, my car has been smelling of fuel for a while, and it does chuck out a bit of white smoke. For peoples experience is this the lampda sensor is does it involve changing the two cats on the car (hope not). What i guess im really asking is would a lampda sensor cause the emissions to be that high and to smell richly of petrol. Thanx again.

the lamda probe tests the exhaust gasses for unburnt oxygen...if it detects any it tells the ecu to enrich the mixture.
so a faulty lamda will give the symptoms you describe.
buy a new one from bm or reputable indy as cheap ones are pretty ropey imo.
there is no need to buy cats as long as this hasn't been a problem for too long.
(unburnt petrol washing over red hot catalytic converters can explode and damage the cat substrate)
