Just bought a 318i and it sounds identical to the car on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oyq8P6j4Mt0 can anyone tell me what the hell it is?

It sound like a noisy shaft bearing in the gearbox mate. If the noise goes when the clutch is pressed the gearbox is dis-engaged from the engine so is not turning hence the noise going with the clutch pressed. :thumbsup

steve 23002 is spot on there dude, bearings or gear chatter from the gearbox!

for the price you can get a box these days i would just swap the gearbox,

around £150 for a 2nd hand one.What am i looking at then? Will it be easier to just replace the box? I've never done any box work so bit new to them

Yeah, its an easy enough swap mate and like ray said they are cheap as chips. :thumbsup
Well had a lil look on ebay and found a engine and box, 67K genuine, no issues with it, in Lincolnshire for the high high HIGH price of........................£30! I was the only bidder, so gonna set to next weekend and stick the lump in too

Fairly sure, its from a 91 318 which to my knowledge is a M42 engine like mine
