I've recently Brought a 1991(J) 318is on 98.000 and i am chuffed to bits with it...
But I,m now thinking I could do with a little more power out of the 1.8 16v.
Any recommendation on how I can get the best out of it. Thanks.

for 1k i would get a 325i lump and get it fitted, as far as i know the earlier 325 didnt have ews so itll be a fairly straight forward swap, 170bhp instantly, then tune that engine as you go, realisticly on a tighter budget your going to achieve around 190-200bhp wich is more than enough untill you want to upgrade. i dont advise tuning the 4 pot engine tho as it just isnt worth it. the new engine would take a weekend to fit on your own or you could just pay up and get a garage to do the swap for you, either way its a lot more bang for your buck than normal tuning

well have a think about what you wanna do, if you want to tune the 1.8 then say and ill help you out with anything you need but do consider the 2.5. it is a lot more bhp for the money and a lot more reliable, they are 170 standard so your not going to break it whereas the 1.8 tuned up will have a shorter lifespand due to the pressures now put on the engine(depending on how far you go)

Well I never have really budgeted when it comes to cars. I spose 1-2 grand is possable. Just want the best out of my engine. Thanks
Loads possible with that amount. As Ron said the easiest way is to drop in a bigger engine! The 328 would be a good candidate as they are so easy to get more power out of. However, unless you have done a lot of work to the 318is I'd just sell it and buy a 328! Would be easier to insure than a 2.8 318is and why build what you can buy.

There's a lot to be said for tuning the M42 and keeping the standard engines characteristics.

You can get the M42 up to 160 + (a real 160!) for about £500. The 1.9 bottom end will mate up to the M42 head and then chip it. You could then cams for the M42 to give you an extra 10 bhp+ at a later date.

For 1-2k I'd be looking at a 2.1 conversion. A good conversion should see 200bhp.

Personally I'd
