Hi all,
Amongst the list of things wrong with my car, i now have a new one to add, plenty of things to keep me busy in the spring!:shifty:

When i turn off the engine i get a heavy rattle, like a cannon ball in a paint can, coming from underneath the car. Strange thing is, when i press the clutch pedal down and turn the engine off, there is no noise:confused

My theory is the gearbox input shaft bearing but i cant be sure, as ive never experienced this before,

any ideas guys??:thumbsup

Cheers,
Lee.

I know exactly what u mean mate........my M3 does exactly the same....................I've never had this before on any of my other cars but after doing some investigation and having the car looked at by "M" specialists I was told that the rattle was actually the gears (in gearbox) "chattering" as the engine switches off and that it was nothing to worrry about and that it was just one of the characteristics of that particular car- kind of like the vanos Growl- just have to live with it- the specialists also said that other BMW also do this and even other makes such as TT's................funnily enough, my mates audi TT also suffers from this.

I know these gearboxes are made of solid stuff, i get no whines or knocks when its running nor does any gears jump out. Would it be wise to change the gearbox oil though?

That noise you are getting does not mean your box is knackered mate............but u are right, when I changed mt gearbox fluid it did make it better but not by much.

well, its nice to know that its a common thing to be honest, and nothing to worry about, so i can get on with the other things that need doing on the car. Ive got to do my propshaft soon so i might as well change the oil while im under there,

Cheers mate:thumbsup

Are the gear changes rather clunky on these too? Mine seems a little clunky

ive lifted the gear stick trim up and had a look at the bush on the linkage and it does appear to be cracked and in generally poor condition, how do i remove the gearstick from the linkage to replace the bush??:confused

Thanks
