Hi Guys

I know this problem is common and have searched but not found any posts on it for the carb model.

I have a 1986/87 D plate E30 316 with an Idle speed problem, It revs between 800 and 3000 rpm on its own, I have looked through all the breather pipes and they are in tact, I have also extended the air intake and sprayed copious amounts of crake and carb cleaner in the engine bay to make sure I have not missed an air leak anywhere with no changes.

I have looked over this link

but it refers to the injected models. Can anyone point me in the direction of what to check next?

Many thanks in advance guys.

Do you know if you have a Pierburg 2B4 carburettor? IIRC this has a idle speed adjustment screw, but the 2BE version doesn't. Your M10 engine should idle at 850 +/- 50 rpm.

If you do suspect a air leak then remove the air filter top and hold your hand slightly over the top of the carburettor to restrict the amount of air being drawn through the carb, if it improves the idle then you do indeed have a air leak/weak mixture
