I have a 320d with engine code M47D20 TU2. Can I put an engine in with engine code M47 D20 Eu3. What is the difference between the 2 engines?

Hi, got a 97 318tds and it started pouring oil all over my drive, had it in the garage today and they reckon its the heat exchange. Is this likely? I am struggling to find a replacement heat exchange and dont fancy main dealer prices so I may end up breaking the car. Anyone got any thoughts?
