Can anyone help identify the correct USB-OBD cable for a 2008 E93? I have searched the web including many forums and discovered that a D-CAN compatible cable would be required for mid/late 2007 onward E9x cars. However, some of the D-CAN cables I’ve found state compatibility with E9x up to 2008. Why is this? Did BMW implement another ODB protocol at some point in 2008? If so, how would I tell if this has been implemented on my car?

    Thanks.

At somepoint the diagnostic interface gained one ethernet port. This does nto mean the other diagnostic interface was deleted.

Check the WDS for your car to see what is on the diagnostic port. Remember to use the build date on the suspension turret, not the date of first registration.

WDS is here. You will need Java and Adobe's SVG viewer.http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/release/en/

Thanks Joylove. Great info and link.

I can’t find the build date of my car – VIN on one turret and a random number on the other which looks nothing like a date. However, in the WDS there are pre 3/2007 (non DCAN) and post 3/2007 (DCAN) ODB sockets neither of which has Ethernet. My car was ordered and built to my spec around 9/2007, so a standard DCAN cable should work, I guess.

Also I have found out that for cars which do have Ethernet, the secondary K-Line (pin 8 on the ODB socket) was reassigned. If using a standard DCAN cable on Ethernet equipped cars, the advice in this case would be to remove pin 8 from the test cable to avoid connection problems. Of course, if you do this, your cable may then not work with some of the older cars which use the secondary K-Line.
