a bit of info about cheap handheld scantools...

firstly they are mostly generic tools out there which means they work on different makes of suitable cars and they only read the standardised structure basic OBD2 "engine" codes manufacturers have to have on their cars by law..

they do not read BMW codes or connect to the BMW diagnostics system.

they do not connect to any other module other than engine ECU they only read engine problem codes in generic OBD2 code format nothing else, so you cannot diagnose ABS,airbag, parking sensor, binnacle faults, heater system etc etc etc with them...

they do not read all codes and info available associated with the engine you need BMW specific tools to do this..

peake research tools read bmw codes but again it only reads engine codes.

if you want a very cheap way to fully connect to your car it has to be BMW INPA software (see various guides in this section) or DIS/SSS progman (more expensive)...

recently discovered this BMW C110 handheld tool which is a BMW specific tool and is pretty comprehensive and connects to everything on the car, it has some good reviews from ppl that have bought and used it,,,
