Hi All, first of all great site.

I am trying to find a good diagnostic scanner for my 318 se (2000). It has the OBD 16 pin connector under the steering column but I have tried to use a couple generic readers but both of them scan through the protocols and then tell me link error. I have tried them on my ford and they both work fine. I know the protocol is ISO but this does not seem to be recognised by the scanners. My local garage users one similiar and they dont seem to have any problems.

Doues any one knnow if there are known issues with generic scanners not picking up the protocol in BMW's?

I have also been looking at the PC soft ones but dont want to waste more money if this isnt going to work either?

    Many thanks

You really need a BMW specific code reader, like a Peake research or if you want PC based then Carsoft or similar.

I've heard of some people using Elm327 but can't comment on what it's like.
