I want to get familiar with diagnostics. i want to start with my bmw e36. i am a mechanic but have never been familiar with using diagnostic tools. i have used vagcom on volkwagens an im looking for a similar setup for my bmw.

what cable do i need to connect to my laptop?

ive seen this one on ebay is this right?

    BMW Diagnostic Scanner Code Tool for E36 Z3 E85 Z4 002 | eBay

and then what software do i need? is it free to download?

im good with computers and i do have limited knowledge on diagnostics but i'm clever enough to get my head around it i just need a bit of help pointing in the right direction becuase ive seen theres lots of different ways out there!

looking for a fairly cheap set up to play around with..ie buy the cable on ebay, download relevant software & plug into my e36

    cheers

if you want easy to load soft wear use the BM Technic kit but if you want to do more than engine diagnostics you will need to get a ADSL connector too ( air bag etc )
Why should I purchase from BM Technic? « BM Technic | BMW Diagnostic Cable | BMW Diagnostic Software

e36's are ADS not OBD2 they will not read everything you have to have a full ADS interface on a serial port for 100% compatibilty...
