    Afternoon folks,

Well ive bought an old high miles e39 and ive plugged in my Peake tool but a bit confused with the results. Im hoping someone can explain it to me. Got these 3 codes, reset it and still got the same 3.

Heres the results: 53 crank sensor, d4 Pre cat oxygen sensor cyls 4-6, and 4c Vanos mechanically stuck

I can understand getting d4. The car starts on the button and it has no running issues at all so i dont understand the other 2 tho.

Be handy if someone can shed some light on this

    cheers, watty

Clear them and see what happens, crank sensor might be an old one.
I'm guessing it's a 523/528? I've seen the "vanos mechanically jammed" turn up more frequently these days, although the vanos technically works.

    Cheers for the feedback guys.

Its a 520. When i said i cleared the codes i disconnected the batt and put the hazards on, left it for 5 then connected it back on. I can only drive it up and down the drive tho.

Is what ive done good enough to clear them right and throw up any new ones?

That won't clear them, they would need to be cleared with the fault code reader

Ah, right cheers, i was reading the wrong bit in the book!

Ive read it again and it says ive to set it to cE, go from there and it resets the CHECK ENGINE and clears the codes

Think ill nip out n try it once i finish my cuppa

Edit: Will moving it in the drive be good enough to throw up any new ones?

    Well thats that done.

Cleared the codes and looks like they were old wounds as DD said.

Nothings coming back up but i only drove it up and down the drive a couple of times tho so im not sure if that would be enough to throw up any new faults that are there?

It might need a longer run under more load for it to trigger stuff, so give it a while and see what happens.
