thinking its about time i invested in some diagnostic software,

so my question is very simple, i haven't got all that much knowledge about it, so i wanted to know which softwares are mac compatible and which would you recommend.

All of the BMW specific software such as Carsoft, INPA, GT1, DIS etc are Windows / Unix only. I'm pretty sure the generic car diagnostics programs are not OSX compatible either.

You might be able to get some of the software to work by running Windows XP under Boot Camp on you Mac or using a virtual package such as VMWare Fusion or Parallels to run Windows. The biggest issue you will come across is that it can be tricky getting some of these packages to work since they use RS232 serial for communication to the interface which plugs into the car. Whilst you can get USB to serial adapters, they can be difficult to configure and some chipsets used in these devices just don't work with the diagnostics software.

The Bavarian Technic and latest Carsoft software will work using a USB connection so these will probably be your best bet but you will still have to run these under Windows.

hmm, possibly worth a try, i do have an xp laptop its just not very good in comparison to the mac with regards to performance, theres nothing stopping installing such software on 2 computers like a serial code that can only be used once etc?

The performace of your XP laptop will not be an issue. Does it have a serial port?
