dailydoggy so if I solder those two pins together, I will be able to read the codes from my E36? Will I still be able to use the vag com cable(OBD2) without the adapter(16 to 20 pin) to read the codes from the E46 if the pins are soldered ?
You need to solder the pins for full connectivity to the E46, not E36.

As DD said, for the later E36 you'll get most of the connectivity you need using the vagcom lead with BMW 20 pin adapter.

I've followed the instructions on page one - their is one small part that i don't seem to have the feature on the laptop

Now change the transmit and receive settings in the drop down boxes to 2048 for both transmit and receive

This is the box i get at this stage

Does anyone have any idea what has gone wrong as the software is loaded but this error message keep popping up

at a guess your either on the incorrect port to be adjusting the settings to start with or you havent actually installed/setup the driver for the usb cable correctly or ya trying to do it without the cable plugged in...

and is that windows XP? cos if it isnt then why are you following INPA instructions for XP?

wot cable are you using and where was it sourced from?

it's not got an FDTI chipset in it for starters its got a CH340 chipset by the look of it...and it will never work...

you have to have a Vagcom with FDTI FT232RL chipset...

    like these
