    Hi all

Am new here and a first time Bimmer owner I hope this is the right thread for my dilemma, I've read this thread and it's so informative thanks for the good work.
I checked my Bimmer and found that I have a rectangular diagnostic socket next to the clutch pedal and a round socket under the bonnet next to the break fluid reservoir.

Am well lost now, I wanted to buy the cable off eBay, I’ve a neighbour that can help with the software installation if I get stuck.

How can I tell which socket to use?

    Thanks, Njoro

Hi I use the plug under dash on my E 46 seems to work well . Only problem I have found can get diagnostic to work with no problems useing the posting on the forum but can not get the tools part to install !!! so can say what is wrong with the car but still can not fix any problems like i want to ajust my head lights for MOT .
So to me the lead was a wast of money as have a multi car reader that tells me what is wrong with the car and can turn light's off on dash. The guy I got my lead from on E bay was not much help he said put posting up on here and as yet no help at all.
As the lead cost's as much as a multi car reader the reader works out to be better deal at least you can do other car's with it may be in time earn your money back ??

would say it is the one under the dash if you have E46 mine is just under the steering with plastic cover over it that slides off .
The first part of the software goes on no problem it is the tools part that we have had problems with . The E Bay seller just told us to post on here to try and get help this is going back a few months now we still have not got it to work. I have had 2 helping me one does networking for a living .
So be careful as it will say you are buying the cable not the software that is free some offer to install it for you I would say that is worth doing for the extra money I would have done it but on the Isle Of Wight .

    Thanks FAL

My Bimmer is a 328Ci coupe and 'I think it's an E46', a friend has installed a diagnostic software for his Audi and so my hope is he might be able to install the Bimmer one on my lappy; running Windows 7 Pro, he also said that if I can get the cable he could get the software from Poland where he bought his when he goes over the summer to see his family. It looks like I'll have to buy the 2 cables any way.

I've got an airbag light on and according to the diagnostic at a BMW specialist it's the drivers airbag, he rest it during a service 2 but 2 weeks later it's back but he did warn me that it might light up again.

Thanks to all for your reply

    Hi All

"Well since I have the older type 20 pin socket"; I bought the cable and USB adaptor that includes software off eBay. The software came with a good PDF instruction file on how to install; it took just over an hour to complete the install, there were a couple of pop ups that were not mentioned in the PDF but I decided to carry on and see how things would pan out; after all I can always reinstall again.

I have just been to check the install by hooking up to the car, the software came to life with the ignition key in position one with various BMW models assigned an ‘F’ key. My car is an E46 ‘F3’ a pop up came up within which I selected ‘Body’ and a sub menu for ‘Airbag’ since this is where I have a fault, this took me to a new window with various options where I selected read ‘Error’ another ‘F’key. The window changed to a new one with the ‘Error’ code and text reading “resistor too large driver airbag”.

‘F2’ is to clear the fault, I hit the ‘F2’ key and after disconnecting the laptop I turned the key to position 2 but the airbag light stayed on so I now know that I need to remove the airbag and check the wiring for loose connections or corrosion maybe. This is the first part of the entire installation you are required to make sure that the software can see your car before you move on to the next stage. I’ll update after part 2 is done.

I have down loaded the software provided in this thread, but I thought to first try the software that came with the cables and see.

Hardware Toshiba U300-15L, Intel Centrino, 32bit, 4Gig Ram.
    Windows 7 Pro

    Regards

"As a noooby to BMW and related software my quest to maintain my Bimmer without having to remortgage"; has led to new discoveries so to speak. Part 2 installation was for DIS/SSS and TIS which is optional but included in the CD. I got everything working first time out, but while exploring the various software icons that now live on my desktop I managed to disconnect the IP address for DIS V57 although this had no impact in INPA.

I quite like the pretty looking DIS. I had to go back into the PDF and work my way through but before doing that I tried a system restore but that didn't work; I had to go into network properties and there I found that the IP had reset from 198.168.68.1 as required to 198.168.80.1, so I changed it back and rebooted but to no avail.

I had to uninstall and reinstall VMware and DiagHead software for the IP address to re-establish. The instructions recommend that you ping the address and also run the DiagHead to make sure that they are talking, so I've got it all back up and running. The TIS program is fantastic I've been able to find my airbag fault rectification procedure including the safe way to handle the airbag, and where to look first for the fault and in my case the first point of call is the 2 pin connector (Pictures included) and not the slip ring which is marked unlikely to be the fault says 'BMW'. So when I get the time and her indoors is not using her car I will attempt to rectify this fault and maybe save my self the £200 quid quote from my local BMW specialist.

Hardware Toshiba U300-15L, Intel Centrino, 32bit, 4Gig Ram 450Gig Harddrive.
    Windows 7 Pro

We have been trying to install this but when it comes to DIAGHEAD we do not have one in the box to choose from did you get this problem?
The IP address was a easy fix we forgot to enable the change before we moved onto the next page .

As I stated earlier in the post I bought my cables and software as a package off eBay, and every thing has gone well by following the instruction so I assume that your installation is different.
As a complete nooby I posted here without realising that this post was for the 64-bit installation; but having said that I can send you the installation file for the DiagHead if you pm me your email; I have it zipped for email. I’ve spoken with the gentleman that I bought the package from during my installation and I found him very helpful and willing to talk one though the installation if one encounters any difficulty. I can provide the link if you pm me. I’d recommend my route because as a new BMW owner this has been painless for me to do based on the difficulties I’ve read about in this forum, but am on a 32-bit laptop.
