I can confirm that this works with both my E39 M5, and E46 320d!

Thank you so much for the guide, I have been trying to install INPA/EDIABAS off and on for about a year on my 64bit Win7 using the guide that came with my cable (I have the same eBay cable as in OP's first post) and I had no luck until I read this. Super!

Thank you very much for a good writeup. Just from me two little hints (maybe they are somewhere inbetween, but I did not find these):

    1. The K+DCAN interface has to be attached to USB 2.0 connector on the laptop. Did not work on mine USB 3.0, when installed a driver with interface plugged in the USB 3.0 connector, it caused BSOD and reboot after plugging the adapter even into USB 2.0
    2. Path in my installation of Windows 7 64bit (Czech national version) on Dell Vostro V131 should not have been set in TMP or TEMP, but in the system variable "PATH" in the textbox under the box of TMP and TEMP.

Anyway, thank you for the writeup and especially for the files which were hard to find for me any other way!

Great thread but i cant get it to work.
Trying to connect it to 1999 e36. All i get is cant connect to controller. I cant open up NCS Expert tool and i get the message about compatability issues even if i run it in xp sp 3 mode. Im using windows 7 64 bit.
    Any ideas guys?

    Cheers.

NCS Expert in this version is, AFAIK, a 16-bit application which can not be run in 64bit Windows even in compatibility mode. NCS Expert 4.0.2 can be run under 64bit OS.

Would this cause my connection issues?

It should not. The INPA software is independent on the NCS Expert. What exactly does the software say?

Is your COM port properly set up also in the Windows hardware manager (latency 1, com 1)? The number of the COM port should not be the problem if it's the same in the HW manager and in all the INPA settings files. The '99 E36 also should not be working on ADS protocol so if you had set the STD:OBD and loaded proper drivers (if you're using the USB version of cable, which is USB-COM FTDI in basic), it should not make a problem. Did you follow the installation steps one by one? Have you made any changes? This is very important!

Yes i set latency 1. HW has it as kline/ads-odb. I set it as std:obd when i installed it and followed the guide to the letter. Its got me baffled.

Do you use an USB cable, or COM cable? Version of USB on your PC? Provide more information, noone here is a wizard, I guess :-)

There are three possibilities of solving your problem:
    1. Do you have a key in position II in your ignition lock, when trying to connect?
    2. Are all the setting files set to STD:OBD (in case of USB cable) and do they match with your hardware settings of virtual COM port?
    3. If there is such a possibility, is there a check mark besides FIFO Buffer settings in your COM port settings in the device manager?
